Everyone here speaks English

Everyone here speaks English, so why can't we understand so many people?

First impressions of England

  • Plugs have on / off switches
  • Walking along the street, the conversations of passers by are understandable - and so you hear / listen to them. Travelling is much quieter where you don't really hear the surrounding conversations.
  • Lots of pubs open with lots of people smoking at the front and drinking large pints of various ales - as many smokers as anywhere else we have visited so far.
  • Some accents are so different we can't understand them - e.g.keishana the trainee receptionist at the Premier Inn welcome desk. She may as well be talking Norwegian.
  • Already the kids accents are changing to mimic what they hear - waiting for a grass (like ass) or yohh-gurt ala team Koz
  • It is sooooo much easier when you dont have to think about waht you are saying in a different language.

Getting off the Eurostar

After a long queue at UK customs we were allowed into the UK by the two friendliest customs blokes ever. They thought it was funny that we were leaving the UK from Bristol. As one said, "There are many good things to see in Bristol, all are called exits". Then the other pipes in with "I'm pretty sure it's the crime Capitol of England - have fun".

Strolled round the corner to our nocturnal abode aka Premier Inn Kings Cross to be greeted by the platinum blond 4 ft 3 welcome desk girl called Lucy. Overtly friendly and super helpful "here are some free ponchos in case it rains tomorrow".

Premier Inn is clean, close to the station and cheap. Loving its work so credit to Chubs ably backed up by Gairn and Claire.

Tomorrow its off to our apartment in Notting hill.

Off to sleep with a full tummy after African food from place we found called Addis (assume its short for Adis Ababa and "African" = Ethiopian). Food was great and served on big tray / plate with wrapped pancake like things to dip and wrap with.

Kids exhausted.

So much to do here - eeek.

Enough
